- According to the 2009 MTF survey, past-year nonmedical use of Vicodin and OxyContin increased during the last 5 years among 10th-graders; and remained unchanged among 8th and 12th graders.
- Females 12 to 17 years old who use prescription drugs non-medically are also more likely to meet abuse or dependence criteria for these drugs.
- While a person who abuses prescription drugs expects specific effects to take place they may not anticipate the side effects of the drug they have taken. If they take OxyContin they know it will stop any pain and create a sense of euphoria. They may not factor in that it also causes extreme drowsiness and slows their breathing; possibility to the point of death.
- Virtually all prescription drugs involved in overdoses come from prescriptions originally. They are then diverted and abused.
