- Between 2004 and 2009, drug overdose deaths in Virginia were the second leading cause of death for residents age 25 to 34 and the third leading cause of death for residents aged 15 to 24 and 55 to 64. Many of these deaths were as a result of overdose associated with the nonmedical use of prescription opioids.
- More males than females abuse prescription drugs in all age groups except the youngest (aged 12 to 17 years).
- Research shows that accidental deaths from opioid analgesic overdoses increased sharply over the past decade, from approximately 3,000 in 1999 to more than 12,000 in 2008.
- Every drug is different, but some common effects of prescription drug abuse include withdrawal, confusion, anxiety, anger, problems speaking, shaking, respiratory depression, heart attacks and coma. The effects are similar to those brought on by the abuse of illicit drugs.
