Many individuals in Richmond who end up in drug rehab are dual diagnosis clients with co-occurring mental and substance abuse problems. In fact, as many as 1/3 of those who struggle with mental health issues in Richmond also become involved in substance abuse at some point in their lives. These dual diagnosis clients frequently turn to drugs or alcohol to self medicate as a way to alleviate the symptoms of an underlying psychiatric disorder. Some addicts aren't even diagnosed with a psychological condition, and only when they begin to receive treatment at a drug rehabilitation program is this sort of issue uncovered. This alone can sometimes help resolve addiction issues and put the individual in a position to receive rehabilitation for both disorders so that they have a strong chance of remaining abstinent and psychologically healthy in the future.
